Hey there,
Surfactants (AKA foaming agents) such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) do not directly cause hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin); however, if your skin is especially sensitive to SLS, and becomes inflamed from the use of cleansers containing this ingredient, you may experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation to the affected area of skin. The hyperpigmentation results from the inflammation of your skin, and may occur with any substance causing skin irritation, not limited to SLS. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more common amongst people of darker skin types.
