That is an interesting question! Mollescum Contagiosum or MC is a viral skin disease. It’s also sometimes called water warts. This viral infection causes a small skin rash with that looks like one or more small growths or wart-like bumps that usually present as pink, white, or skin-colored. The bumps are usually smooth and shiny and may have an indented centre and are common in children who may share skin-to-skin contact, or adults who share towels or personal hygiene items. Our best suggestion for any skin lesion that appears is to head to a medical professional to get it properly diagnosed. Your medical professional may then present treatment options for the viral infection. Most of the time, MC does not present any serious health risks and will clear on its own, but it can take a while.
In the meantime, the best way to manage the skin disease is to try ensure that it doesn’t spread. Here are a few tips to help you manage and prevent the spread of Mollescum:
1. Avoid scratching, picking or rubbing at the growths, this can cause the spread of the virus on the skin
2. Wash hands often with hand wash and water
3. Keep area of the growths clean
4. Try to cover each growth with either clothing or a water-tight bandage, especially if you’re going to partake in activity where equipment will be shared
5. Change bandage regularly, or when it becomes dirty
6. Do not shave over areas with bumps
7. Moisturise the skin if it becomes dry
