Hi,
Pigmentation is a skin condition that affects many people around the planet. According to Dr Esther Hong, Pigmentation occurs by production of melanin (a type of skin protein) by melanocytes (a specialised type of cell in the skin). Melanin is then deposited in the top layers of the skin and is responsible for our skin colour.
Melanocytes numbers are the same for each racial group, but the amount of melanin produced by the melanocytes differs in each person. Darker skin tends to produce more melanin, while fair skin produces less.

If you want to treat any kind of pigmentation in your skin our first recommendation is to always consult a medical professional or a skincare professional. They can then recommend treatment options or even cosmetic procedures that will be effective in removing or reducing the appearance of these spots.
If you want to prevent the appearance of dark spots we would recommend wearing daily sun protection.Sunscreen is the key to protecting your skin from UV rays and sun damage, which can cause and/or worsen pigmentation. Look for broad spectrum sun protection to ensure protection from both UVA and UVB rays. You could try a sunscreen from our SunSense range*, which has different products dedicated and formulated for different skin types and are broad spectrum SPF 50 or SPF 50+.
To reduce the appearance of dark spots, you can try products containing Vitamin C, an antioxidant that not only helps combat the production of melanin, but also helps combat signs of ageing. Products that help to brighten skin tone often contains this key ingredient. We recommend that you try our Elucent Even Tone* products, which aims to help brighten complexion and reduce the appearance of darkness.
