Hygge for your home and beauty regimen
The concept of hygge has been enjoyed for decades in its native Denmark, and the rest of the world is finally starting to catch on. There’s no direct translation into English, but “hygge” (pronounced “hue-guh”) refers to a feeling of cosiness and contentment. It can be experienced alone or with friends and is about slowing down to enjoy the moment. It’s about taking time to savour the finer details of daily life. The philosophy out of cosiness is understandable in Scandinavia where winter stretches over many long months. It’s perhaps less so in Australia, where so much of our downtime is spent being active and heading outdoors. But if there’s ever a time to embrace hygge, it’s now.
Here are three ways to bring some hygge into your life – either at home alone or when spending time with friends.
1. Setting the scene for hygge
Hygge is all about feeling cosy, and the fastest way to do that is by layering up fabrics and textures. Blankets or throw rugs add warmth to a room and are lovely to snuggle into. Drape them over the back of a sofa or stack them in a basket on the floor so they’re within easy reach. From woven runners to plush sheepskins and textured jute or sisal mats, bring warmth underfoot and make a room feel snug. The right lighting is essential to setting the scene – glaring fluorescent globes are much too stark for this style. Instead, channel a cosier feeling with candles or warmer-toned light globes. Many hygge advocates prefer a multitude of lamps to one bright overhead light. If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace in your home, now is the time to light it.
2. Sharing hygge with friends
Spending time in the company of friends and loved ones is an essential component of hygge. But it’s more laidback. Carve out enough time to ensure that you and your guests can all truly relax. Whether you’re sharing a three-course dinner or a morning tea, as long as everyone feels comfortable and at ease. In Scandinavia, the ritual of “fika” fits very nicely into a hygge way of life. Fika essentially means a coffee break, but it’s far removed from downing a flat white while you’re on the run. In Sweden, where the term originates, fika means stopping to savour a moment. Traditional Swedish households believed that seven different types of cakes should be on hand and offered to guests during fika!
3. Enjoying hygge by yourself
While it’s lovely to hunker down with friends, it’s equally nice to hygge alone. Light the aforementioned candles, snuggle into a fortress of rugs and blankets, and hit play on a movie. When it’s cold and windy outside, it’s perfectly acceptable to have the occasional session of binge-watching! Put away your phone, though! Hygge is about being fully in the present moment, which is difficult when you’re constantly scanning for new messages!
This is also a great time to treat yourself to a mini facial, to restore and replenish your complexion.
