Ego recently spoke with Cole Durant, one of Australia’s top beach volleyball players. We get some top tips from him and take a look at his bag for his gym essentials.
Cole has represented Australia at various national and world beach volleyball tours. Currently, he’s working towards qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. When he’s not training or competing, Cole enjoys going to the beach, playing golf and occasionally some Salsa dancing.
Whether I’m out training on the beach or just travelling between home and the gym, it’s vital to stay protected. SunSense is my go-to brand with SPF 50+ sunscreen, which is the ideal spectrum. It’s important to stay hydrated before, during and after a workout, to recover all that fluid lost from sweating. Being thirsty is a sign that your body is dehydrated, so be proactive and drink water. Make it a habit to drink during regular intervals even if you’re not thirsty.
Another one of my gym essentials! Most people know that they should always wipe down and disinfect gym equipment once they’re done exercising, but not everyone remembers to wash their hands. With so many people going in and out of the gym it’s important to remember to wash your hands or use a hand sanitiser once you’ve left the building – it’s hard to stay fit when you’re sick in bed! Whether I’m heading to the gym, or travelling to compete in a tournament, I always carry Aqium Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser with me.
An iPhone or portable speaker is a great way to get you ‘in the zone’ and stay motivated through a workout. A couple of my go-to workout songs at the moment are: Blessings the Reprise by Chance the Rapper, Weightless Wings by Bliss n Eso, My Favourite Song by Thundamentals, Hold Strong by Rob Bailey and the Hustle Standard and Powers by Tidus.
A lot of people struggle with a very annoying problem when they train – chafe! Don’t let it get in the way of your training routine or put you off exercising. Just use a little Silic 15 on the areas that rub and you’ll be training without pain again.
Don’t forget to throw a low carb protein bar or a shake into your gym bag ready to go to refuel your body. I use True Protein’s great range of WPI 90 Whey Protein Isolate straight after my workout or competing, to assist in muscle recovery and growth.
