Healthy Skin Tips with Dual Olympic Swimmer Belinda Hocking

Posted on : 12.04.2016

Swimmers spend hours upon hours each week in chlorinated water, which can take a toll on their skin, causing dryness and irritation. We caught up with Dual Olympic Swimmer and Ego’s Healthy Skin Ambassador, Belinda Hocking, to find out how she maintains healthy skin throughout the year.

Hey Belinda, thanks for taking some time to chat with us. As a Dual Olympic Swimmer, you must be in the pool training quite a lot..

I swim 9 times a week, 2 hours per session, so at least 18 hours each week, more if we are competing on the weekends.

Wow, that’s a lot of time in chlorinated pools – does the water take a toll on your skin?

Yes, it does. My skin becomes very dry, and if I change pools my eczema flairs up. I have to shower and moisturise straight after each session.

How much out-of-water training do you do?

I do 5 gym sessions a week, and they go for 2 hours each. They include both lifting weights and cardio.

So you spend a lot of time training, what do you like to do when you get some time off?

I love to catch up on sleep, read books and meet up with friends.

What is your number one beauty tip?

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise – it’s best to do this within three minutes of hopping out of the shower or bath to lock the moisture into the skin.

What does sun protection mean to you?

It means everything; it’s very important and is such an easy thing to do – put sunscreen on before you go outside. I have seen firsthand what the sun can do to your skin, so I’m very vigilant when it comes to sun protection.

Do you see yourself as a role model to young Australians? What does that mean to you?

I like to think that I can inspire young people — especially people from the country. I would like to think that they can see me and everything that I have achieved, and for them to know that anything is possible if you work hard anyone can make their dreams and goals a reality.
I like to go back to the town I grew up in, Wangaratta, as often as I can and talk to and inspire the young kids, if you put your mind and heart towards anything, then nothing is impossible.

Tell us about your daily skin regimen.

I like to wash my face every morning and night with QV Face Gentle Cleanser, and in the morning I apply QV Face Moisturising Day Cream SPF 30. I also moisturise my skin twice a day and every time I get out of the water, I love QV Skin lotion.

What’s your day to day makeup routine like?

I don’t like wearing a lot of makeup, so I tend to use a tinted moisturiser to cover any spots and blemishes.

We are very excited to have you join the Ego family! Why did you feel Ego was the right fit for you?

I have used Ego products all my life, as when I was growing up, and still now, I have very sensitive skin. I found that Ego was the only product that I could use on my skin without getting a reaction. I also had/have very bad eczema that tends to flare up when I change pools, and Ego has a great eczema range. I couldn’t see myself ever using any other products except Ego. I LOVE it. The best thing is that it is very affordable as well, and easy to get from your local pharmacy, which helps.

What does healthy skin mean to you?

It means putting the right products on my skin that are gentle yet moisturising. The QV range of products are all free from common irritants including fragrance and colour so I know they are good for my skin.

What’s your favourite Ego product?

Ohh that’s a tough one! It would have to be between QV Face Moisturising Day Cream SPF 30 and Aqium Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser. I can sometimes go a bit overboard when it comes to sanitising my hands!
